For the implementation of the Working-Landscape programme of Tropenbos Suriname, a group of Saamaka youth came together to support Tropenbos Suriname & VSG (association of Saamaka traditional authorities). To get familiar with each other the youth group had their introduction meeting on the 7th & 8th of May 2022. During the first day Kapitein Stiefen Petrusi shared information about the process of the land-rights issue that led to the Saamaka judgement. On the second day the group had a workshop where they discussed various environmental issues that the Saamaka community faces and they formulated concrete action points on how to approach these challenges. The topics that the group discussed ranged from inclusive governance, forest preservation, community forestry and sustainable forest use. Overall, the action points mentioned are about awareness about the implications and consequences of deforestation, sustainable forest/land use by promoting eco-tourism and processing Non-Timber Forest Products, promoting and commercializing traditional knowledge to generate an income for the Saamaka communities.
